Our Founding Principles

Our Founding Principles connect the strengths of our past with the ambition, determination and expertise of our current and future organisation.

Father Chris Riley

Youth Off The Streets’ Founding Principles reflect the fundamental beliefs and ideals held by our founder, Father Chris Riley AM. These principles still hold true for us today as we strive to support even more children and young people while honouring Father Riley’s legacy.

Father Chris Riley founded Youth Off The Streets over thirty years ago with the aim of championing and supporting vulnerable children and young people. We are proud to carry his vision forward as a community of professionals committed to empowering young people and advocating for their rights and needs. Through these principles we remind ourselves of our shared role as stewards of his inspiring legacy.

Youth Off The Streets’ Founding Principles

  1. We recognise the strength and potential that is already within every child and young person.
  2. We know that relationships built on empathy, non-judgement, honesty and compassion can transform the lives of young people.
  3. We listen to young people, value the knowledge of their diverse lived experiences and place their perspectives at the centre of our actions.
  4. We believe every child and young person can give back to their community and in doing so find a sense of hope, belonging and purpose.
  5. We are committed to finding solutions to complex issues by implementing best practices, asking ‘what works here’ and embracing continual learning.

"Blame is the ultimate guilt trip, one that paralyses understanding, compassion and love."
