What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

Recognition of Prior Learning or RPL is an assessment method where your previous learning – whether formal, non-formal, or informal – is evaluated against the requirements of a VET qualification or specific unit of competency. If you can demonstrate that you have the necessary skills and knowledge, you may be granted credit for part or all of the qualification without needing to complete the usual coursework.   

How does Recognition of Prior Learning work?

1. Initial assessment
You’ll have a conversation with a trainer or assessor to discuss your previous experience and determine whether RPL is suitable for you.

You’ll need to gather and submit evidence that demonstrates your competence in the relevant areas. This might include:

If the assessor determines that your evidence demonstrates the required competencies, you will be granted credit for those units. If you only partially meet the requirements, you may need to complete additional training or assessments.   

Who can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

Recognition of Prior Learning is available to anyone with relevant experience.

It’s particularly useful for individuals who:

• Have been working in a particular industry for several years without formal qualifications.   
• Have completed similar studies or training in another country.   Have gained skills through volunteering, hobbies, or other non-work-related activities.
