“Youth Off The Streets has helped me live a secure, happy and fulfilling life” - Noni
By the time Noni* was a teenager, her relationship with her alcoholic mother had fallen apart.
Her childhood had been violent. Threats to her safety had seen her spend some of her primary school years away from her family. Her stepfather, a heroin user, had committed suicide. Her father and extended family couldn’t offer her shelter.
She left home and started living on the streets.
When Noni came to Youth Off The Streets for help, our priority was to find her a safe place to live.
With determination and courage, Noni started to turn her life around. Soon, Noni made the transition to independent living. With the support of Youth Off The Streets, she completed her HSC and received a diploma in community welfare.
Noni left high school with big ambitions.
She wanted to go to university and study for a career in the community sector. She wanted to make a practical difference to young people who were facing the challenges she had overcome.
With no family or financial support she wasn’t sure she could achieve these goals.
Noni nominated herself for the Youth Off The Streets Scholarship Program – and she was successful.
When Noni commenced her university studies, she was able to purchase a laptop, textbooks, and other essential study equipment.
She began developing a proposal for a community program to provide practical assistance to young people living in out of home care.
Noni’s scholarship connected her with the Youth Off The Streets mentoring program. With the support of her mentor, Noni was able to turn her proposal into reality. She built partnerships with local services, recruited volunteers, and sourced major funding from corporate sponsors.
Noni had another personal goal, a more personal one. She wanted to learn how to drive. Before she received her scholarship this seemed beyond her reach. With the assistance of her mentor, Noni completed her driver training and obtained her licence.
