Andrew was homeless and addicted to several different drugs when he came to Youth Off The Streets.
What Andrew* needed urgently was a safe place to live. For homeless kids, crisis accommodation is a priority. That’s a need that Don Bosco Home in Marrickville is designed to meet. The home is part of the Inner West Youth Homeless Services.
At Don Bosco Home, Andrew had a roof over his head and access to youth workers and counsellors. He was able to deal with his substance abuse in a supportive and caring environment. After a few months at Don Bosco Home, Andrew was able to move into independent housing, all within the Inner West Youth Homeless Services.
Andrew was determined to turn his life around. He’d had enough of living rough. He wanted an education.
And so he decided to return to school and earn his HSC.
Andrew entered Key College, one of our accredited high schools, and with the support of the Youth Off The Streets team, set himself on the path to employment.
Andrew didn’t just gain his HSC, he also notched up an impressive list of extra achievements.
He completed two hospitality courses, a graphic design course, and a TAFE Certificate I in office skills. That’s not all. He also earned himself the Duke of Edinburgh silver award.
When he finished his HSC he was offered a traineeship in administration and office management. As part of this traineeship he completed a TAFE Certificate IV in business administration.
Andrew has finished his traineeship and is still living independently. He is working part-time for a local printing company and our Aftercare Coordinator is supporting his search for full-time work.
