The Organisation:

Youth Off The Streets is a non-denominational community organisation working for disadvantaged young people who may be homeless, drug dependent and / or recovering from  abuse. Youth Off The Streets supports these young people as they work to turn their lives around and overcome immense personal trauma such as neglect, physical, psychological and / or emotional abuse.

It is our goal that these young people will leave our care with a high school education, living skills and a job in hand.

The Role:

The primary purpose of this position is to assist young people to develop their capacity to take responsibility for their lives, by supporting individual learning plans and to support positive youth engagement in innovative education. Additionally, the Student Support Youth Worker will provide care, support, and structure in line with the School’s vision and mission.

The role covers a broad range of requirements in areas of learning, support, wellbeing and potentially training.

Classroom Support and General

  • Work to establish a positive rapport and relationship with students to demonstrate and encourage positive behaviours.
  • Participate in individual learning plan meetings/case reviews with key stakeholders where appropriate.
  • Follow individual learning plans/program plans.
  • Closely monitor and assist students in activities within and outside the program facility, in accordance with program policies and procedures.
  • Maintain program records (e.g. Case notes, Individual Learning Plans, Program Plans/Evaluations etc.) as required and provide to the Manager as directed.
  • Participate in the development of the program as required and implement those plans within the centre.

Wellbeing

  • Participating in recreational/learning activities with clients.
  • Accompany students to appointments/activities.
  • Supervise and assist clients with daily chores.
  • Supervise/facilitate after school, weekend and holiday activities.

This is a permanent full time role, reporting directly to the School Manager and is based at Craig Davis College.

Selection Criteria:

Essential:

  • Minimum certificate IV qualifications in Youth Work, Community Services or related field
  • Minimum of 12 months in a similar position working with disadvantaged youth with the ability to research and make referrals appropriately.
  • Knowledge of and experience in schools/community services with a strong focus on higher education.
  • Proven ability to plan, organise, monitor, evaluate and adapt programs to meet identified outcomes.
  • Assessment and presentation skills.
  • Self-motivated with sound time management skills.
  • Effective communication, analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated passion and dedication to motivate and support young people achieve their education and vocational goals and enter the workforce.
  • Competent IT knowledge, including Windows programs.
  • Ability to work within a team and independently to achieve goals.
  • Ability to explore alternatives to reach collaborative agreements.
  • Have an understanding of adolescent development
  • Demonstrated capacity to respect and work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people of diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Possess a thorough understanding of the mandatory child protection reporting procedures and values that underpin a child safe organisation.

A valid and current NSW Working With Children Check, full Australian Working Rights, First Aid Certificate and a Drivers Licence are essential for this position.

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a school environment.
  • Experience and/or qualifications in Training and Assessment will be favourably considered.
  • Skills, ability or experience in Creative & Digital Arts.
  • Ability to integrate technology effectively into programs.
  • Current, active experience in a variety of sports, activities, camps and excursions.

  • Restorative Practices Training
  • Cultural Awareness Training
