Scholarships To Help Young People Achieve Greatness

March 13, 2020

A devastating study revealed that in the last year one in three Youth Allowance recipients quit studying due to a lack of funds.[1] Meaning the systems made to empower young people and combat issues of disadvantage, are further failing our young people.

The study also found that 8 in 10 Newstart recipients are regularly skipping meals due to lack of funds. Young people need to feel safe and supported in order to reach their goals and without access to basic resources, young people are set up for failure in their studies and training.

At Youth Off The Streets we believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of disadvantage. However, in order for young people to unlock their full potential through education they must have the right resources to do so. Too many young people around Australia do not have the right educational support or funds to pursue further education.

Those young people, who are not participating in education or training, are far more likely to experience adverse life outcomes such as homelessness, poverty, mental illness, substance abuse and neglect.

Our National Scholarship Program gives young people in need the resources to excel in their education journey. To date our National Scholarship Program has awarded over 300 young people throughout Australia with scholarships to reach their educational goals.

One young person told us if it wasn’t for the scholarship program they wouldn’t have been able to complete university successfully.

“The scholarship gave me a chance to achieve my goals. I come from a very underprivileged family so it provided me financial support to purchase books and a laptop to be able to complete my university assessments.” – Hugh 18

Every young person should have access to education and training regardless of their circumstance. We, as a nation, need to ensure our young people have this access to education to reach their full potential.

Youth Off The Streets continues to award over 20 scholarships every year to young people in need providing them with the resources and guidance to reach their goals.
