On May 30 The Youth Off The Streets’ Koch Centre For Youth and Learning held a Reconciliation Week event welcoming our schools, staff and the Macquarie Fields community to engage and celebrate in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
The event was a day of cultural education for our young people and their community with guest speakers, cultural workshops, entertainment and a lunch together.
Chris Standing, Director of Aboriginal Services, addressed the crowd at Koch giving an inspirational message on reconciliation.
“Reconciliation in my eyes is coming together as one and not forgetting the past but building a future together, we need to reconcile with our land as well,” said Chris.
“We should all be privileged to walk on this ground but we continue to take and not give back. Today I challenge all of you to respect and acknowledge that we are all on this path together. “
This year the theme of the 2019 Reconciliation Week is Grounded in Truth: Walk Together with Courage.
It is important to engage with Aboriginal history and culture and the only way we heal is to acknowledge the truth of our past.
Through all of our services at Youth Off The Streets we encourage our young people to attend cultural events, participate in programs and learn about the world’s oldest culture and they take immense value from this.
Youth Off The Streets would like to thank everyone who attended the event and for sharing this day with us!
