Youth Off The Streets Bankstown Outreach held and International Day of the Girl Summit event this past Thursday 25 October. It was a special day dedicated to celebrating young women in the community and promoting opportunities for learning and personal development.
The day started off with a group ice breaker activity and self-defence workshop where the girls danced to music and learned some basic self-defence moves. After morning tea, the girls were then broken up into four different groups and had the choice to participate in a dance workshop, a creative writing workshop, a fashion and self-esteem workshop, or an illustration and design workshop.
Throughout the workshops the girls were taught about self-confidence and encouraged to embrace their personality and unique stories in a safe and fun environment. The group then re-gathered to attend a panel discussion with a group of influential women, including one of our board members, Anna Ainsworth. The panel discussed modern day topics including feminism, bullying, and gave the girls some tips for navigating their way through school and life. The girls then asked questions to gain further insight in how to apply what they’ve learned to their everyday lives.
During the second half of the day the girls were given the opportunity to chat to services and projects available to young women in the community. This was followed by more workshops that covered topics such as gender, consent and feminism, leadership and collaboration, body image and employment skills. The day concluded with a fantastic performance by a local artist, Zainab Kadhim, from Stories of Strength.
The International Day of the Girl Summit was a wonderful event that brought young women together to celebrate their uniqueness and connect them closer to their peers and community. We are very proud to have been able to organise such a successful event for the benefit of our young people and we look forward to repeating it again next year!
