Every year, Youth Off The Streets’ Open Day provides an opportunity for anyone to come and find out more about what Youth Off The Streets has to offer. This year, Open Day took place on Wednesday 4 July, and we are happy to say, it was a huge success!
We welcomed several of our staff, supporters, donors and volunteers from across the country to the Koch Centre for Youth and Learning in Macquarie Fields, to participate in a range of activities that showcased how we help young people in each of the communities we work in.
The 2018 theme for Open Day – ‘Together We Can’ – was incorporated into the entire day and is a consistent ideology across our organisation in all aspects of our work.
The day commenced with an Acknowledgement of Country performed by our Aboriginal Services Manager and Cultural Advisor. A smoking ceremony followed to officially welcome guests to the day. We then heard from senior members of Youth Off The Streets including Father Chris Riley, our CEO and Founder, who spoke of how Youth Off The Streets as an organisation comes together to support young people.
To conclude the formalities of the day, a young person from one of our Western Sydney outreaches spoke to the crowd about their very disadvantaged background and how Youth Off The Streets helped them overcome their adversities and begin to achieve greatness.
Many of our services held information and activity sessions detailing how our day to day operations impact and can change the life of any young person in our services:
- Our outreach team ran outreach activities such as football passing, giant chess and popcorn making.
- Our Sydney Homelessness team prepared a presentation on how our inner west youth are affected by the issues of being homeless or at risk of being so.
- Our Education and Training and Development team spoke about the importance of education in breaking the cycle of disadvantage and poverty experience by many of the young people in our services.
- The Koch Centre for Youth and Learning presented alongside our Macquarie Fields-based Aboriginal services team to discuss how we service the local area through outreach programs, excursions, camps, cultural programs and much more.
Guests were then given a delicious lunch and the chance to mingle further with the staff and volunteers at Youth Off The Streets.
Open Day was a fantastic day, which allowed us to showcase our services to the local community. We would like to thank all those who came out to our Open Day and those who continue to help us change the lives of countless young people.
