On Saturday 29 April, the Sydney to Surfers bike ride left Hornsby to begin the 1000km, 7 day ride to Seaworld, Surfers paradise. The 141 strong group (including 11 young people from youth off the streets and 6 staff members) are today riding 151.6km from North Haven to Nambucca Heads, but we would like to update you on the ride so far.
The team had a wonderful first day thanks to the company champion systems as our Cycle of Courage, Youth Off The Streets team had the privilege of wearing the new uniforms that really represent Youth Off The Streets. Each of the riders achieved their goals and showcased great perseverance through various obstacles throughout the day.
The conditions were great and riders from the first pack helped a number of our young riders climb up Mt White. Many Youth Off The Streets’ young men assisted the young ladies on the tougher climbs and stayed towards the back of the pack to encourage them. There was a great vibe and atmosphere throughout the day in which the students pushed through the pain and got through the ride together.
Youth Off The Streets’ students have been well recognised for their hard work with several awards. Alice* who is participating in the Sydney to Surfers ride for the first time successfully rode the whole first day, she was awarded with riding gear that was donated by the Odd Spoke in Dural. Also recognised on the first night was Shelly* who pushed through many barriers and went beyond her goals and expectations for the first day. She was awarded with riding gear from ABC Bikes in Liverpool.
Some of our students performed so well on the first day of riding that they were invited to ride in Pack 3 for the second day. Their skills as riders impressed the entire pack 3 team.
Two other students were recognised on the third day, Jamie* who received an odd spoke from dural riding gear for his great communication with the team, and Ben*who received an award for being helpful throughout the day and being a supportive team member.
Youth Off The Streets is proud of our young ambassadors participating in the ride, their dedication to their peers and fellow riders as well as the Youth Off The Streets values is truly admirable and we wish them the best for the rest of their ride.
