On Friday 12 August, Youth Off The Streets’ Youth Initiative Team hosted a ‘Youth Sleepout’ in Bankstown to raise funds for Youth Off The Streets.
After months of planning, the Youth Initiative Team had organised a successful event with a variety of guest speakers, performers, entertainment and sponsors.
The event was opened by Father Chris Riley, and followed by guest speakers from Mission Australia and Y-Foundations. Our young people also took part in the proceedings with stories and poem readings of homelessness and the circumstances and barriers faced by young people. The nights formalities were broken up by various activities such as: glow stick painting, pillow making, fire pits, and a photo booth.
The event had around 80 young people participate with a total of 40 choosing to sleep outside alongside our youth workers. The night was then capped off by a viewing of the 2015 Film, Lady in the Van and the announcement of the winners of the raffle, including great prizes such as: a Go Pro, Beats By Dre Earphones, a Framed Bulldog Shirt, 10 Hoyts movie vouchers, 20 Bulldog tickets and 2 Snooze pillows.
The next morning began with a workout session from an accredited fitness trainer conducting a primal movement session, which had some of our sleepout members up and moving at the crack of dawn. A post-workout feast was provided, as the success of the initiative was discussed over breakfast.
Well done to the Youth Initiative team for organising such a successful event, and thank you to our supporters: Condell Park High School, Canterbury Bankstown Council, Hoyts Cinemas, Mission Australia, Crunch Fitness, Hope Point Church, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and all of the young people who performed on the night.
We look forward to doing it again next year!
