A night of notables featuring Father Chris Riley

September 30, 2015

Youth Off The Streets was recently contacted by a student of Cammeray Public School. Yasmin, a year 6 student, was planning on going as Father Chris Riley to a fundraising night called ‘Night of Notables’. Everyone from her class dressed up and played the part of a notable person.

Thanks to Yasmin for the amazing effort she put into the costume and for the excellent poem she wrote for the occasion, which you can find below.

I was born in 1954

When I was younger I knew I would score

To help the young get healthy

But I wasn’t all that wealthy

I got my diploma in 1975

After that I knew I would thrive

In 91 I started a group called ‘Youth off the Streets’

Abuse is what I would try to defeat

The homeless is who I would save

Even though they were so brave

I would help them get through tough times

Even though some had committed crimes

From the ages 12-25

I would make them want to stay alive

If they relied on drugs I would fix their problem

I would try to make them happy not solemn

If they wished to pass away

I would give them a reason to stay

I don’t want kids to be depressed

So I try to bring out the best

In 2003 I won Australian of the Year

After that I knew my retirement would not be near
