Youth Off The Streets supports Premier’s tougher laws against child abuse
Youth Off The Streets supports NSW Premier, Mike Baird’s tough new measures targeting child sex offenders. Nothing is more important than protecting our vulnerable children from abuse and neglect.
Australia’s judicial system is far too lenient on people who abuse children and the possibility of a life sentence is a much needed inclusion. Victims of child abuse suffer a lifetime of psychological and emotional distress; the punishment should align with the consequences of the action.
Youth Off The Streets has helped many victims of child abuse, they are far more likely to develop negative, damaging behaviour says Father Chris Riley, CEO and Founder at Youth Off The Streets.
“Victims of child abuse often: take drugs to kill the pain of abuse, attempt suicide, self mutilate and have major trust issues. We, as a society, must ensure that we provide our children with a safe and supportive environment, so that they have the opportunity to reach their full potential,” he says.
“Increasing the maximum sentence to life for people who abuse children under 10 is a step in the right direction. We as a nation do not take the protection of children and youth seriously. Sure, when we read graphic headlines, we get shocked and angry – but that subsides as new headlines occupy our attention. The new measures ensure that we take this issue seriously and punish the perpetrators accordingly,” he says.
Youth Off The Streets is dedicated to assisting disadvantaged young people. Victims of child abuse are often the most troubled and more needs to be done in preventing these crimes. Youth Off The Streets supports the Premier’s tough new measures targeting child sex offenders.

Helping young people to discover greatness within, by engaging, supporting and providing opportunities to encourage and facilitate positive life choices.
About Youth Off The Streets:
Youth Off The Streets is a community organisation working for young people who are homeless, drug dependent and recovering from abuse. We support these young people as they work to turn their lives around and overcome immense personal traumas such as neglect and physical, psychological and emotional abuse.
Since opening in 1991, Youth Off The Streets has grown from a single food van delivering meals to young homeless people on the streets of Kings Cross to a major youth specific agency providing a wide range of services offering a full continuum of care. It is our goal that these young people will leave our care drug free, with a high school education, living skills and a full or part time job in hand.
